Minutes:

1.  College recruitment and admissions.  Challenges for reaching target audience, expanding opportunities for URM students, lessons that we can take to the broader community.

  • UHC works closely with the central admissions offices to assist with recruiting to UHC
  • Major rebranding – how can we better reach out to high school students to recruit into the UHC
    • Prospective students receive folder with lots of information; brochures, scholarship information, etc.
    • Cards for specific ambassadors tied to prospective student’s field are included to personalize student experience and give them someone to reach out to and connect with.
    • Smaller brochures are sent out by Central Admissions sent out to prospective students who meet HC requirements
  • OSU works closely with key high schools and councilors
    • UHC invited to events with OSU at high schools to reach out to prospective students
  • Do we work with HC alumni to set up events?
    • Not currently
      • But some parents of current HC students may be asked to host events
      • Some HC students go back to their high schools to talk about the HC
      • We are working on reaching out and building better relations with HC alumni
  • Has there been any consideration in SATs/ACTs requirements for HC?
    • Not clear that SAT/ACTs are accurate predictors of success; setting a minimum would change the makeup of eligible student cohort
  • Is there an overall recruitment goal?
    • Ideally keep Fall, first-year (from HS) enrollment at 300-350
  • This year we are focusing on:
    • First Generation
    • Underrepresented Minorities
    • Underrepresented Colleges
      • Ideally, 3-5% of each academic College would be in the HC
      • Students who meet the minimum requirements for HC but have not applied
      • HC will reach out to the student to explain the HC and encourage them to apply
      • Partnering with INTO OSU to encourage international students to apply, as well.
  • Working closer with COB and CPHHS to increase HC enrollment from those colleges.
    • Last year a special scholarship was given to CPHHS students to cover the HC differential
  • Students from underrepresented colleges
    • If they did not make it into the HC, but earned a high GPA in their first term, they were given the opportunity to enroll in the HC during Winter term.
  • How can faculty help this process?
  • Athletics and recruiting
    • Variation in participation across sports
      • New coaches are encouraging student athletes to apply
      • Very strong support from Athletics leadership in supporting Honors College Student Athletes in the last two years. Cooperative efforts to build community with Honors College student athletes in more deliberate ways as they have very challenging schedules, particularly when their sport is “in season.”

2.  College Program Review.
Due to the complex nature of the topic, please plan to discuss how best we might review the self-study, recommendations and action plan over the next several meetings.

  • Has there been any update from Curriculum Council? Expected during Winter term, 2017.
