Working group review and updates

  • Conservation and Efficiency group has 5 members
  • Jon and Brandon will work on a committee roster
  • Chris Kulah will join Transportation working group
  • Ed Dever will review working groups and select one later
  • Gary provided an update on the Transportation working group.  They have looked at City of Salem actions as well as campus actions.  Gary will arrange a working group meeting this summer.
  • Brandon and Leela provided updates from the Conservation and Efficiency group, the notes of which are in Box.  A draft letter has been uploaded to Box and we invite all committee members to comment. Committee members are asked to provide input by noon Friday, June 21.
  • Work groups should share their meeting schedules with the larger committee to bring in members who have not yet picked a working group, and to keep the larger group generally informed of working group action.
  • There could be some access issues within the Box folders that are preventing some members from seeing all files and folders.  Gary found the issue – there are two root level folders (one with “OSU’s” in the title).  Gary will work on merging the two folders.  (solved!)
  • Jon shared Communication and Reporting group recent work, and there are also notes on Box.  Three objectives include a quarterly newsletter to start in fall 2019; social media presence; and community dialogue circles.  Dialogue circles would be face to face conversations about climate, similar to the Community Dialogues that Student Leadership and Involvement does quarterly.
  • This committee should probably have a web presence…  Linking from the sustainability main website is an option, as well as creating a category within the Ecologue blog, or creating new digital spaces.
  • John shared some game ideas from his canvas site.  What if sustainability/carbon was at the visibility and awareness level of the food drive?  A common presentation slide set would help us share the message.  Going to department meetings might be a good way to intro the concepts, as well as things like Green Office Certification
  • Beth attended a conference recently and is thinking about the linkages between social justice and sustainability.  She will report more back later.  Not only is this important for the equity connections, but a united front also helps build momentum.
  • Brandon will send out links to OSU carbon footprint calculator, and Green Office Certification.
  • Communications working group plus others will convene a meeting this summer to start thinking about what should be included in a short, shared presentation that committee members can use within their units to raise awareness and begin action.  Linkages should be clear between goals (in the commitment) and the actions we are asking people to take.  Also important is the next president’s awareness of the commitment.  Brandon will work on making clear the connections between the commitment’s goals and actions we are asking people to take: where do we have people plug in their actions to meet specific goals?
  • Next meeting will occur in July or August, then again in September.
