Course Proposal

  • Discussion Needed
    • HDFS 260 – Social Processes and Institutions
      • The reviewer was not present to discuss – moved to next meeting.
    • ENG 415/416 – Writing Intensive Course
      • In general, looks well done.
      • ENG 415 claims that students must have senior standing, but it is an unenforced requisite. The wording makes it seem like it is required.
      • Grades for writing must be over 50% - the writing grades are not separated from all the other work, making it unclear if writing meets the requirements.
      • Both syllabi have a dead link.
      • A lot of the work is done in small groups.
      • WIC calls for 20% of course grades must be individual writing – ENG 416 is at 10%, so it’s unclear if they’re meeting the requirements.
        • Formal writing can be split into 2 parts. Boosting it up to 25% would be appropriate.
        • Engineering seems to have structured WIC across two-terms.
      • Course enrollment is expected to exceed 20 students – it looks like they do have the necessary staff to assist with grading with larger sections.
        • Motion to approve ENG 415 and send ENG 416 back with a request to make writing assignments more clear; seconded. The motion passed 10 in favor, none against. There were no abstentions.

Discussion – Anita Helle

  • WIC Director Update
    • Sarah Peralt has been hired to fill the WIC Director role.
      • She is coming from UC Davis and will arrive in August.
      • Sarah brings admin experience from a 5-person WAC team.
      • She will need CIM and CPS training.
        • Heath will meet with Sarah to go over the specifics of CIM and its form.
      • She has done a lot of work with Faculty Professional Development, especially in STEM.
      • She has done research with Psychologists and there’s a medical humanities overlap in her work.
      • She has demonstrated depth of knowledge in current WIC pedagogies and done her research on OSU’s WIC program.
      • Her appointment will be split FTE – .5 with the School of Writing, Literature and Film and .5 under Alix Gitelman.
        • How can Sarah meet the needs of the BCC? How can Anita help with the transfer?
          • Any changes to WIC should be done in consultation with the Baccalaureate Core Committee (BCC).
        • Vickie Tolar Burton has offered her assistance.
        • Would it be beneficial to have a BCC member as an Ex-Officio on the WIC Advisory Board?
