Category II

PHL 220 – World Views and Values in the Bible – Western Culture
-
Category Reviews: none
Category Reviews
-
ANTH 312 – People of the World – Western Culture
-
Syllabus states 3 SCH pre-requisite; form lists Anth 310 or 210 0 need preference for any social science; need additional statement for connection between student outcomes and course outcomes. LO 1 no description of assignment and key points that are addressed; better for 2 and 3, but would like more description placed in the syllabus
Action: Recertify
-
ART 311 – Late Chinese Art – Cultural Diversity
-
Syllabus doesn’t make connection ; only one syllabus; no explicit mapping; there are four sub-points, but some are missing parts; need more alignment to ensure it meets course learning outcome #3;
Action: Provisional recertification with an opportunity to resubmit with the above corrections when it’s reviewed in 2016-2017 for the Literature and The Arts category.
-
ENG 205 – Survey of British Literature: Restoration to Romantic Era – Western Culture
-
Only addresses Literature and the Arts; not Western Culture learning outcomes; No conduct link; assessment of LC is short; LO #2 difficult; trouble spots with students obtaining LO, but they’re not ahningig; syllabus needs to be reviewed next year for Literature and the Arts. Western Culture is not mentioned.
Action: Provisional recertification for 3 years or make the corrections for next year when it’s reviewed in 2016-2017 for the Literature and The Arts category.
-
Eng 201-Western Culture – Shakespeare
-
3 syllabi, 3 instructors – all are done differently – 1 was done better; add statement that indicate more clearly how the learning outcomes will be assessed;
Action – HOLD until the reviewer can be present to discuss their concerns.
-
Phl 170 – The Idea of God – Western Culture
-
The form indicates it was only taught in Fall, but it was also taught in Spring; only one instructor; high number of D, and Fs in both Ecampus and F2F courses – bring to attention of instructor to address; instructor put a lot of thought into the learning outcomes - development and syllabus were change Bb to Canvas; performance expectations (i.e., A=X%); Ecampus syllabus has the incorrect student conduct and DAS statements; F2F syllabus has the wrong DAS statement and no student conduct link;
Action: Recertify upon correction of above options.
-
WSE 266 – Industrial Hemp – Western Culture - Gerd
-
One listed instructor, but another instructor mentioned; the learning outcomes are not fitting together with the outcome; 32% Fs - supposedly because students could not use Canvas; response to LO #1 is missing; unclear whether the course is meeting the learning outcomes; needs substantial development; are teaching on a broad enough scope to fit the category?; because students, apparently, can choose between WC OR Social Processes, which cant’ be done – the course must meet outcomes for both categories in all learning outcomes.
Action: Decertify due to multiple issues – warning for SPI category review that it fits better for SPI than Western Culture
Category II Courses
-
FES 477 - Gerd
-
Showed improvement; normal problem with connection between Los and ; other issues were addressed
Action: Approve, but add strong statement that they must fix it before the category review.
-
PS 354 – Kira – International Organizations and Global Politics
-
Didn’t correct the student conduct link, in the plagiarism section), but in the disrespectful section, the student conduct link is correct; there are no responses to the assessment questions.
Action: Return to instructor for corrections to the above.
-
WLC 301 (Reviewer out of town—proceed based on form) Susie – Introduction to World Language and Cultures – Social Processes and Institutions
Action: What was the action for this one?
Matter Arising
There are five Spanish courses, for which all have the same restrictions, and the responses for all are the same. Additionally, students must have 3 hours of previous Spanish courses at a 300-level and all courses are conducted in Spanish. Forms were not submitted for two of the courses.
Action: This is not permitted and presents an undue burden for Baccalaureate Core students. Rorie will develop a decertification letter to forward to APAA.
