Approved Without Discussion

  1. Category II:

b.  Category Reviews:

  • HST 103 – History of Western Civilization – Western Culture

BCC Subcommittee Work During Summer 2016 and Beyond?

  • This would include reviewing Category II proposals, those that can be approved without discussion, or those that are minimum changes. Several present were willing to work during part of the summer. This may allow the BCC to begin working on the Category II proposals sooner in the Fall. There may also be less of a backlog in the Fall.
    • This is not setting precedence for the BCC to work during the summer for subsequent years. Availability to work during the summer will be determined by the members from year-to-year.
  • Do BCC members want to review and revise questions on the Curriculum Proposal System, since they are likely older than three years?
    • It was suggested that, perhaps, this could also begin to occur during the summer.

Category Review

  1. EXSS/KIN 312 – Sociocultural Dimensions of Physical Activity – Western Culture
  • D Taught On-campus & OSU Cascades; intro letter indicating there is no connection between Corvallis and Cascades. No discussion of papers; only basis of assessment is via papers and tests; nothing connects with Western Culture category. No connection to learning objectives.
  • Master syllabus used by Cascades in 2004 and taught by a TA.

Action: Incomplete – needs to come back in one year when SPI category is reviewed.

b.  SPAN 331 – The Cultures of Spain and Portugal – Western Culture – updated review

  • Previously pre-requisites were unclear.
  • Incorrect DAS and Student Conduct statements; minimum syllabus issues; no connection between the course and Bacc Core category

Action: Recertify after syllabus issues are corrected

Category II Proposals

a. CHN 331 – Chinese Culture – Change

  • New course description better matches the course content.

Action: Approved

b. CHN 332 – Chinese Culture - Change

  • New course description better matches the course content.

Action: Rorie will review CHN 332 to determine whether resubmissions are appropriate; BCC will again review at the next meeting.

c.   CHN 333 – Modern Chinese Culture – Change

  • New course description better matches the course content.

Action: Bob will review CHN 333 to determine whether resubmissions are appropriate; BCC will again review at the next meeting.

d.  GEOG 250 – Land Use Planning – New course

  • Issues with assessment verbiage (request they correct prior to category review).

Action: think about how students are achieving the learning outcomes; likely want to think harder about the Social Sciences question.
