Category II Proposals

  • No Discussion Needed
    • HM 470 (WIC)
      • The WIC director worked with the submitter to make needed changes
      • Approve
    • ART 411 (WIC)
      • The WIC director worked with the submitter to make needed changes
      • Approve
  • Discussion Needed
    • FILM 310
      • Sen back for minor revisions
      • The syllabus had no course specific learning outcomes and lacked details about how grades are determined
      • The course has prerequisites that fulfill two categories; Literature and the Arts and Western Culture. This lead to some concerns that students would not get a broad enough experience if they were taking the prerequisites and also FILM 310.
      • Course is listed as 4 credits
        • Baccalaureate Core classes are supposed to be 3 credits (at minimum) but there has been an upswing in submitted courses being listed as 4 credits and some departments requesting to change some 3 credit classes to 4 credits.
          • This sparked some concern that students may not be able to find 3 credit courses that fit their schedule and would be required to pay more for a 4 credit class and extra credits when they graduate.
          • It was brought up that if more courses were 4 credits, it would lead to students needing to take fewer courses to graduate and would save money on classes and materials overall.
            • Most of these 4 credit courses are in College of Liberal Arts (CLA)
              • Four years ago, there was a discussion with CLA and an agreement to keep most lower division courses at 3 credits, but CLA was setting up new degree programs at the time that required many to be set up with 4 credits
            • Math has only one lower division 3 credit course (MTH 105) and are requesting to raise it to four credits. This would lead to there being no 3 credit lower division courses in Math for students to take, but it would allow students to transfer to other universities and not have to retake the course. Most other universities have a similar course for 4 credits.
          •  There was discussion over changing the verbiage of students taking one class in each of the offered areas (5 courses for 3 credits, each), that they simply must take 15 credits worth of Baccalaureate Core courses. But this lead to concern that students may not take a class in any one area.
          • Capacity was another thing to consider; how many seats are there and at what times are they available to students?
            • Literature and the Arts currently has 198 available seats at a variety of times and days of the week.
  • Should the Baccalaureate Core Committee have more say in policies and processes?
    • Send back with minor revisions
  • AEC 352
    • Some minor changes that need to be addressed
    • Change the wording on the Baccalaureate Core statement
    • Approve with edits
