Report Back from University Budget Advisory Committee

  • Nothing new to report back from the University Budget Advisory Committee

Program Proposal

  • Renewable Materials Undergraduate Major (BS, HBS), Key #49 – Rename Undergraduate Major
    • They are dropping five courses, some of which are high FTE hands on courses, which explains the drop in FTE

Action: Motion to approve; motion seconded and passed with 5 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 votes in abstention.

  • Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences Undergraduate Major (BS, HBS), Key #178 – Rename Undergraduate Major
    • Name change to Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences to reflect the name change of the unit.
    • No budgetary impact seems likely since the department has already gone through a name change.

Action: Motion to approve; motion seconded and passed with 5 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 votes in abstention.

  • Earth Sciences Undergraduate Major (BS, HBS), Key #524 – Inactivate Undergraduate Major
    • No budgetary impact with terminating this major.

Action: Motion to approve; motion seconded and passed with 5 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 votes in abstention.

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Undergraduate Major (BS, HBS), Key #587 – Change Undergraduate Major
    • Spreadsheet and Narrative had good details.
    • Many of the classes are already being offered, but they are planning to hire someone to teach classes that are currently not being taught. Do we need to know which courses were being taught? How many courses are not being taught? Does this affect the FTE? Is the budget accurately reflected?
    • Why do they think 100,000 is sufficient for the start-up package?
    • On the recurring tab – the OPE seems somewhat low by about 2K each year.
    • Expectations for cost of professional development seem a little low, as well.
    • Several courses for this program in CIM have not yet been marked as being offered at Cascades.

Action: Motion to shelve this proposal until March 28; motion seconded and passed with 5 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 votes in abstention.

  • Design for Social Impact Certificate, Key #751 – New Undergraduate Certificate
    • First year is funded by the Impact Studio.
    • Seems like they’ve under-budgeted for the FTE.

Action: Motion to shelve this proposal until March 28; motion seconded and passed with 5 votes in favor, 0 votes in opposition and 0 votes in abstention.
