Policies and Definitions

  • Definition of an academic unit
    • An academic unit is a unit whose primary mission is teaching and/or research related to a nationally recognized academic discipline [identified with Classification of Instructional Program Codes (CIP)] or reflects a research in a field that will likely endure and remain useful. Features of an academic unit include:
      • Delete “a” (shown in red)
      • Because there is no reference to scale, could there be only three people in the unit? Yes.
        • There are other checks and balances in place to address this issue.
  • The verbiage “…will likely endure and remain useful.” was questioned.
      • It’s up to groups such as the Curriculum Council to determine whether the criterion is met.
    • Suggested to delete either “or reflects a research in a field that will likely endure and remain useful:” OR “that will likely endure and remain useful”.

Action: Gary will discuss these suggestions and concerns with Stefani Dawn.

  • Program Type Communication Policy
    • First bullet: ““On-campus” programs must be structured such that students can complete all program requirements on campus.”
      • Suggested replacing “on campus” at the end of the sentence with “through campus-based offerings”.
    • Second bullet: “Ecampus” programs must be structured such that students can complete all program requirements via Ecampus. EXCEPTIONS: Some Ecampus programs require a brief in-person internship or assessment or deliver hybrid courses; some required lower division courses are not available online via Ecampus (e.g. Bacc Core Communications requirement).”
      • Dianna suggested deleting the first portion of the ‘EXCEPTIONS’ section because it is not all inclusive: EXCEPTIONS: Some Ecampus programs require a brief in-person internship or assessment or deliver hybrid courses; some required lower division courses are not available online via Ecampus (e.g. Bacc Core Communications requirement.)
    • Third bullet: No suggested changes.
    • How will categories be identified in the catalog? No decision has yet been made.

Academic Program Reviews – AY 2013-14
Carey now has a conflict with the May 12-14 Tourism and Outdoor Leadership (BS), and will need to be replaced.

Update on the RFP Process for a New Learning Management System
Dianna Fisher reported that the Learning Management System RFP closes today at 3:00. PACS will now remove proposals that don’t meet minimum standards; the review teams will then begin reviewing the remaining proposals. The hope is to have sandboxes up by Spring term for testing. The timeline is posted on the blog.

Report from the Chair – Mike Bailey

  • Curricular Proposals – Mike reported that there six Category I proposals that the Curriculum Council has forwarded for approval to the Faculty Senate since the beginning of the academic year.
  • Leadership Structure
  • Because Mike Bailey is running for Faculty Senate President-Elect, Richard Nafshun will begin phasing in to chair the Curriculum Council.

Report from Academic Affairs

  • No report.
