Proposal to Establish an AJ (Applied Journalism) Course Designator – Sue Helback

  • The proposal intends to provide an academic foundation for students already active in student media (The Daily Barometer, KBVR, etc.). New Media Communications will offer elective courses. There are currently four core courses as well as seven blanket courses; other courses may be added as the program develops.
  • The Registrar determined that the AJ course designator is available.
  • A concern is that AJ doesn’t adequately communicate the course topics. Other institutions use designators such as JOUR, NMC, etc.; AJRN would convey Journalism.
  • It was unclear whether internships are required of all students.
  • Why ‘Applied Journalism’ and not ‘Journalism’?
  • The proposal indicates that Student Media may need to create courses with new designators to accommodate their teaching mission. Clarification of an additional designator could be asked/determined when the minor is reviewed.

Action: The Council will postpone discussion of the AJ course designator proposal and will consider it in conjunction with the Applied Journalism minor.

Expedited Category II Proposal – Gary Beach

  • Discussion continued from October 7, 2016.
  • Curriculum Council members were asked to review the proposal with whomever handles the majority of the proposals in their unit/college and determine whether there are missing categories or ones that should come to the Council for review.
  • A new version updated September 20, 2016 is linked above – the previous version updated September 1, 2016 is also available for comparison.
  • The revisions are in bold – Changed Proposals:
  • Add a Schedule Type to an existing course except Laboratory, Studio, and Recitation (Contact APAA Curriculum Coordinator)
  • Larry Bulling noted that, if the above bolded types are included, a new syllabus would be required, particularly if the number of credits changed.
    • Minor change to the course description
  • Who defines a minor change? APPA will determine; if it’s unclear, the proposal will be routed for the normal review.
  • No additional revisions were suggested.

Action: Joan moved to approve the document with the proposed changes; motion seconded and approved.

Report from the Co-chairs – John Bailey, Prem Mathew

  • John noted that 80+ Category II changes accumulated in the Curriculum Proposal System over the summer; he reviewed and cleared many of the changes.

Action: The Council was comfortable with him clearing Category II proposals in the future that don’t require discussion.
