1.   Curricular Proposal – BA, BS in Hospitality Management #90496

Richard Nafshun, Curriculum Council co-chair, will present the Category I proposal for approval.

2.   Bylaws Revisions

Kevin Gable, Bylaws and Nominations Committee chair, will present for approval proposed Bylaws revisions:

• Disqualify deans and above from Senate membership (but not representation). The OSU President and Provost would remain ex-officio members.
• Create a Hatfield Marine Science Center Faculty Senate apportionment unit.

NOTE: Because the Faculty Senate Bylaws require a written ballot for Bylaws revisions, only those present in the meeting room are eligible to vote on these Bylaws revisions.
 

 

4.   Approval of the 2015 Apportionment Table

The 2015 OSU Faculty Senate Apportionment Table will be distributed separately and presented for approval during the meeting.
 

1.  Learning Management Technology

Lois Brooks, Vice Provost for Information Services, and Dave King, Associate Provost for Outreach and Engagement, will discuss OSU's plans for Canvas and participation in the Unizin consortium.

 

2.  STAR Academic Intervention Initiative

Jeff Malone and Chrysanthemum Mattison will present the background and initial assessment results for a new program designed to help identify and support students who struggle academically during their first year. Students Taking Academic Responsibility (STAR) is an initiative where students receive individualized support from their local college advising office and other support resources on campus to assist in their academic recovery and persistence at OSU.

 

3.  Recommendations for Enhancing Undergraduate Student Success

Angelo Gomez, Executive Director of Equity and Inclusion, and Susana Rivera-Mills, College of Liberal Arts Executive Associate Dean, will present will present the recommendations of the university’s Leadership Council for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity to enhance and equalize student success.
 

1. Declining Senator Election

All currently employed academic, research and professional faculty are eligible to be elected to a Senator position and represent faculty in their respective Faculty Senate apportionment unit. If you wish to decline to have your name placed on the Senator nomination ballot, please contact the Faculty Senate Office at [email protected] no later than Noon on November 14. Faculty must decline each year.
 

2. President-Elect, Executive Committee and IFS Elections

As provided in the Senate Bylaws, (Article VI, Section 3) and amended on October 6, 1977, "additional nominations may be made from the floor and the nominations shall be closed." The Executive Committee requires that if such nominations from the floor are made, the nominator must obtain, in advance, the nominee's willingness to serve if elected.

The University-wide election of the President-Elect and Interinstitutional Faculty Senator (IFS) will be conducted between November 18 and December 10. Ballots will be distributed to all eligible voting members of the OSU faculty, in accordance with current Faculty Senate Bylaws. Voting must be completed no later than 5:00 PM on December 10 and results will be verified prior to the December 11 Faculty Senate meeting. The individual receiving the highest number of votes will be declared the winner in each of the elections.

Election of new members of the Executive Committee will be conducted electronically prior to the December 11 Faculty Senate meeting. Those candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected. Tie votes shall be resolved by written ballot in a run-off election during the meeting.
 

3. Instructions for Nomination and Election of Faculty Senators

Upon receipt of all materials, and approval of the apportionment table, the Faculty Senate Office annually transmits Senatorial nomination and election instructions to the head of each voting unit; a sample letter is available for viewing. 
 

4. Awards Solicitation

The Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee is accepting nominations for the awards listed below; criteria and nomination forms regarding these awards are online; nominations will be accepted through February 11, 2015. The Awards Summary Table lists all awards, synopses, due dates, etc. Faculty are eligible to nominate deserving colleagues for these awards. For further information, contact Vickie Nunnemaker.

5. Faculty Senate Retirements and 1039-Hour Appointments

Faculty Senators whose terms extend beyond December 31, but who are retiring at the end of fall term, are no longer eligible to serve as a Senator. If you fall into this category, please contact Vickie Nunnemaker at [email protected] so a replacement can be identified to complete the remainder of your term.
Faculty whose Senate committee/council terms extend beyond December 31, and are either retiring at the end of fall term or whose 1039-hour appointments end fall term, are no longer eligible to continue serving. If you are not filling a specified emeritus/retired position on the committee/council on which you serve, or if you are unsure, please contact the Faculty Senate Office so a determination may be made and/or a replacement identified.
 

6. Vacancies

Please notify the Faculty Senate Office if a sabbatical, leave or retirement will prevent you from completing your term as either a Senator or Faculty Senate committee/council member. If you are away more than one term, exclusive of summer term, a replacement is required. This information will assist us in identifying a replacement. Senators and committee/council members immediately continuing on a 1039-hour appointment may retain their position as long as the temporary appointment continues or until the end of their appointed/elected term, whichever comes first.
 

7. New Library System Transition

On December 1, 2014, the OSU Libraries will be transitioning to a new library management system. This migration will affect all areas of the library system, including interlibrary loan, circulation, acquisitions and online searching. In preparation for the move, the OSU Libraries' faculty and staff have been diligently working to make the transition to the system as seamless as possible for our users.  However, there are a few interruptions to library services we want to be sure the campus is aware of:

1. 1. 1. 1. Reserves and reserve processing will be interrupted with the migration.  Please encourage faculty in your departments to be prepared for longer than normal processing times and to submit their winter term reserves by mid-December so they get in the processing queue for when the new system is live.
         2. Credits for returned books that have been billed for replacement won’t be working initially in our new system.  We encourage you to track down as many of your overdue or billed materials as possible and check in at the circulation desk with them.  We’d like to give as many credits and adjustments as possible before December 1^st!
         3. There will be a circulation freeze over the Thanksgiving weekend, meaning that while items can be checked out, transactions will take longer and availability in the library catalog may not be accurate during that time.

The October Faculty Senate webcast is posted online.

       To participate in Faculty Senate meetings via Webcast, log in to http://live.oregonstate.edu/ beginning at 3:00 PM on the day of the Senate meeting, and then login with your ONID credentials to the Faculty Senate Chat Room. Senators and proxies must log in with their real names so that attendance can be accurately reflected; if you are a proxy, please indicate the Senator you are representing.
