Professor of Teaching workgroup update

A small group consisting of Yanyun, Cheryl, Kristin and Jennifer will be collecting information from 12 institutions that have similar Professor of Teaching positions.  We will review the institutional governance websites and if we are able locate someone in the professor of teaching position and ask them if they would be willing to have a phone conversation with us. The questions we will ask include:

What is the title of this type of position?

Is it tenure or non-tenure?

What is the duration of the appointment?

What does promotion look like for this type of position?

How is the position evaluated?

What are terminal degrees for these positions?

Are there particular academic departments that these positions are used in?

Do you do national searches for your hires or are they internal candidates?

Are the hiring practices done by committee or are they appointed by a department head?

What are your salary ranges?

How do these positions differ from an instructor position?

What are the issues at your institution regarding these types of positions that we should be aware of?

We will also look at the position qualifications that we can potentially enhance the proposed OSU position description.

Action item:  The group will summarize the information by June 15, 2016 and have a report ready to be viewed by the committee Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Update on conversation with Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Brenda McComb

Cheryl discussed the current proposal for a professor of teaching at OSU and the process that the committee is taking to get input from other institutions that have similar positions.  Brenda asked that we look into how these positions are structured and the salary ranges and wanted to know if any of the institutions we are contact were our peers.  She wanted to know if teaching could be considered a practice and if we could utilize the professor of practice track that we already have?  Our committee determined that the Professor of Practice position does not meet this need as the faculty in those positions are located across Oregon and isolated from resources other faculty have access to but are doing work that is significant locally or regionally.  This track really seems to be set up to serve faculty in extension.  Cheryl also talked with Brenda about the Professor of Teaching proposal and how we would get it approved by the board it the proposal passes the faculty senate.  Brenda mentioned that we are breaking new ground and that she would be in conversation with the Provost.

Action item:  We will keep Brenda informed of our progress and share our summary report with her for her input.

NTT issues workgroup update

The NTT group had not met at the time of our committee meeting but had planned to meet the week of May 20, 2016.  The group will be looking population demographics with a focus on minority and underserved populations to determine if there are any issues that the Faculty Status committee should address in the next year.

Action item:  The NTT workgroup will develop a report to share with the entire committee by June 22, 2016.

Recommendations for committee chair for next year

Kristen Ziebart and Yanyun Zhang are interested in serving as co-chairs of the committee in the upcoming year.  This would serve the committee well for continuity of the work the committee will be engaged next year.  Other members in the group are relatively new.  Kristen Ziebart, Cara Walters and Randal Milstein have seniority on the committee.

Our next committee meeting will be on Thursday, July 7, 2016 (12:30 – 1:30 pm) Location TBD
