Curricular Proposals

Course Proposals

  • Key #3 – AAE 412 : Space Systems Engineering – Change Course – Engineering
    • Mark assumed that there are no pre-requisites, but the proposal would normally indicate there are no pre-requisites for a graduate course; John Becker-Blease will comment in CIM.
  • Key #21500 – BIOE 611 : Cell and Tissue Engineering – New Course – Engineering
    • Consists of a slight renaming of existing courses.
  • Key #21501 – BIOE 612 : Modeling of Physiological Systems – New Course – Engineering
    • John Becker-Blease suggested that the proposer could be asked to strengthen the verbs but considered ‘model’ to be acceptable.
  • Key #21502 – BIOE 613 : Drug and Medical Device Regulation – New Course – Engineering
  • Key #21605 – FES 581 : Stream Ecology – New Course – Agricultural Sciences
    • Mark noted that the instructor previously had a split appointment with Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences and Forestry; however, since their appointment is now solely in Forestry, the course is being moved to Forestry with a new course number.
  • Key #12431 – ME422 : Mechanical Vibrations – Change Course – Engineering
    • Mark stated that “Write a critique” is an assignment but not a learning outcome. John Becker-Blease proposed to push forward the proposal but comment that the learning outcome should be updated prior to final approval.
  • Key #49 – ACTG 420 : IT Auditing – Change Course – Business
  • Key #21261 – BIS 471 : Business Telecommunications and Networking – Change Course – Business
  • Key #21262  – BIS 472 : Information Systems Security – Change Course – Business
    • John Becker-Blease explained that an MBA collaboration with Science is in the system and will involve some slash courses, which includes the above three courses.

Program Proposal

  • Key #329 – Bioengineering Graduate Major (Meng, MS, PhD) – Change Program – Engineering

Action: Chrissa moved to approve all of the above course and program proposals; motion seconded and passed with no votes in opposition and no abstentions.

Outstanding Course Proposal

  • Key #10137 – HDFS 460: Family Policy – Change Course – Public Health & Human Sciences
    • It was believed that this proposal was still outstanding, but it is not in the Graduate Council queue.
    • John Schuna stated it is also not in his queue (college reviewer).
      • Upon further review, it was determined that the Council discussion on January 26, 2023 was generally supportive. However, it needed a stronger distinction between graduate and undergraduate expectations and should be bolstered to make clear the "value added" for graduate students. and learning outcome level. Additionally, the university expectation for graduate learning outcomes is that the action verb be from the "creating", "evaluating", or "analyzing" categories. For these reasons, the proposal was rolled back with the chair offering suggestions on relatively small edits that would better capture the expectations of graduate students. After revisions were made by the originator, the chair approved the proposal on March 16, 2023.

2023-2024 Graduate Unit Reviews

  • Phil explained that there are a total of four unit reviews pending. Although the reviews now cover more scope, the amount of reading is less; the Graduate School is encouraging units to limit review reports to 15-30 pages. There will be some prep work in the term prior to the review, and he needs Graduate Council members for each review to engage in planning for and preparation of the site visit for each review.
  • Volunteers –
    • Winter 2024: Crop & Soil Science, Liz Schroeder
    • Spring 2024: Horticulture, Kim Halsey; Ethnic Studies, Mark Needham; and Economics, Chrissa Kioussi

Announcements

  • John Becker-Blease felt it was likely that a meeting will not be needed during the summer; he will contact those who volunteered, if needed.
  • John Becker-Blease will try to determine Fall 2023 meeting times this week.
