Approval of Minutes

There were no requested edits to the October 3 minutes; the minutes were approved as distributed.

Soils Graduate Program Review – Andreas Schmittner

After discussion, the Soils Science Graduate program review report was accepted and is ready to move along.

Action: Jim moved to accept the report; motion seconded and passed unanimously.

Following the motion, conversation ensued over what to do with the report. In the past the unit had three years after meeting with the vice-provost to follow recommendations. Given that the report is only now being accepted, do they have three years from today or from when they wrote the report? We didn’t know. Jennifer Dennis agreed to check with Susan Capalbo.

Curricular Proposal – Biological Data Science

Action: Postponed until the following week.

College of Business Proposal for an Alternative Summative Assessment John Becker-Blease

  • After discussion, the College of Business proposal for an alternative summative assessment, was approved.

Action: Ryan moved to approve the proposal; motion seconded and passed with one abstention (Jim Coakley abstained).

  • The Councilors were complimentary of the proposal. A recommendation to the program was made that students be advised quarterly of their status in terms of successfully passing 70% of the required assessments.

Proposed Standing Rules Revision

The proposal is to require a faculty member approved to advise at all five levels of graduate involvement. The relevant section of the Standing Rules is:

The Council consists of one graduate faculty member from each College and one graduate student. The Chair shall be a faculty member with immediate prior experience on the Council. The Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate School and the Chair of the Graduate Admissions Committee shall be ex-officio, non-voting members.

Theresa would like the Council to consider a revision to:

The Council consists of one graduate faculty member from each College who is approved for all five levels of activity as a graduate faculty member, and one graduate student. The Chair shall be a faculty member with immediate prior experience on the Council. The Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate School and the Chair of the Graduate Admissions Committee shall be ex-officio, non-voting members.

Action: Due to the meeting ending, the discussion related to the proposed Standing Rules revision will be continued at a later date.
