Old business: Discussion and Recommendations (continued)
Automatic approval list for mentoring and teaching
Near the close of our last meeting, based on our discussion to that point, the following language was suggested for continued discussion:
Teaching: To be eligible to teach an Honors College course or to mentor an Honors College thesis, faculty must have a title of Senior Instructor I, Senior Instructor II, or be in a professorial [rank | position] within the University.
Mentoring/committees: For an Honors College committee, the mentor and one other committee member must have a title of Senior Instructor I, Senior Instructor II, or be in a professorial [rank | position] within the University, while the third member may be anyone the mentor considers an expert.
The language “A senior instructor with a terminal degree in their academic field” was suggested for discussion.
We discussed the desire to broaden the ranks/positions for whom there is automatic approval, particularly in light of the changing landscape in academic appointments (i.e. the increased use of a wider range of positions), but also to reduce the admin burden on both instructors/mentors and HC (e.g. to complete and review “applications”), to achieve clarity, and to have a document which is not in need of constant revision as titles/ranks/positions evolve.
