Student Voter Registration Efforts

Student participation in national and local elections is vital to our civic process. Faculty Senate leadership encourages all faculty to promote voter participation.

The Associated Students of Oregon State University (ASOSU) and the Associated Students of Cascades Campus (ASCC) have been working with the Oregon Student Association to register students to vote. University support for voter registration activities was recently required by legislation passed during the 2016 legislative session (SB 1586).

One of the most effective tools student government has open to them is a “class rap;” a five-minute registration presentation at the beginning of a class. While students may already be registered to vote, in order to ensure they are able to participate in the election, it is important to validate that they are registered using the correct address.

Whatever your political positions, I think you will agree with me that it is vital to inspire our students to be aware of issues, participate in the process and vote in elections. This is especially true at present when the validity of our democracy is beset by challenges and doubts.

Please consider allowing ASOSU or ASCC to use a small amount of your class time for this effort. You may be receiving an email asking to schedule a time that works best for you. If you are willing to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the contacts below:
