Re: Task Force on Athletics
The integration of the athletics program into OSU continues to be of a concern to many faculty, students, administrators, and alumni. The decisions made in spring 1999 concerning additional university funding for athletics has resulted in many questions related to the athletics relationship to the university. After the announcement of additional funding, an agreement was reached to appoint a joint faculty-administration task force to examine the long-term relationship of athletics to the university.
Tony Wilcox has agreed to Chair this task force. The other members include:
Bob De Carolis, Athletic Department
Aine Humble, Human Development and Family Sciences (Graduate Student)
Denise Lach, Sociology
Susan Longerbeam, Student Health Services
Gordon Matzke, Geosciences
Mark McCambridge, Business Services
Bruce Sorte, College of Agricultural Sciences
Melanie Spraggins, ASOSU
Joshua Stroud, ASOSU
Kenneth Williamson, Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering and President of the Faculty Senate
The charge of the Task Force is to examine the long-term relationship of the athletics program to the university. The foundation of the inquiry is the fact that OSU wants to develop a successful athletics program within the present PAC-10. Specific questions to be addressed are:
-
What are the costs and benefits associated with developing and maintaining a successful PAC-10 program?
-
What are the projected sources of revenue to support such a program and specifically, what portion of the revenue should come from institutional funds and student fees?
-
What is the projected budgetary path for athletics and what are the implications to the university and its other programs?
-
What are the relationships of the athletics program to academic programs, alumni relations, development, and student enrollment?
The Task Force's responsibility is to develop a report related to these and any other appropriate items during the 2000 academic year. The report will be submitted to the Faculty Senate and upon approval, the report will be forwarded to the President, Provost, and the Athletics Director for their consideration.
Thank you for your willingness to participate in this effort.
