The OSU Academic Advising Award recognizes undergraduate academic advising by OSU faculty members whose primary role is the delivery of undergraduate academic advising services to students. This award acknowledges advising as a profession making a pivotal contribution to the OSU community. The recipient receives a $1,000 stipend and a plaque/certificate.

Eligibility

  • Eligibility is extended to individuals with professional faculty rank as well as fixed-term academic rank faculty whose primary role is advising, rather than teaching, research and service.

Individuals holding academic rank with responsibilities for teaching, research, and service, in addition to advising, may be nominated for the Dar Reese Excellence in Advising Award.

  • Must hold at least .75 FTE of a full-time appointment centered on undergraduate academic advising.
  • Academic advisors who assist students in developing suitable education plans, clarifying career and life goals, selecting appropriate courses and other educational experiences, interpreting academic requirements, and using all available resources to enhance their education are eligible for this award.

Award Criteria

Nominations will be evaluated on the evidence of effective advising qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding student advisor. Such evidence should include the following:

  1. Attitude: Demonstrating a professional attitude toward advisees through interpersonal skills and accessibility.
  2. Influence: Positively influencing and monitoring student academic success and development and mentoring colleagues.
  3. Contribution to the University Community: Promoting new and innovative programs that promote student success and development.
  4. Involvement: Demonstrating leadership, present or past, in a professional organization related to student development.
  5. Professional Development: Pursuing professional development such as attendance or presentation at seminars and conferences, at OSU or elsewhere.

Nomination Process and Submission

Following the instructions completely will ensure consideration of the nomination.

The nominator shall submit the Cover Sheet and the complete submission packet in one PDF via the Qualtrics Submission Form. Do not begin entering information on the Qualtrics form unless you are ready to submit the nomination – the form CANNOT be saved and finished at a later time. The submission packet will include evidence that the nominee meets the criteria, as well as (1) nomination letter*; (2) three letters of support* showing evidence of the nominee’s achievements; (3) the nominee’s vita; and (4) the nominee’s position description including breakdown of FTE allocation.

Required letters: Each of the below letters shall not exceed two single-sided pages using at least 12 pitch and 1" margins. Signatures on the letters must be included.

* Letters of Support: One letter of support must be written by a current or emeritus faculty member. One must be from a current or former student. The remaining letter of support may be from a student, faculty member, alumni or other individual who can comment on the nominee’s qualifications.

   * Nomination Letter: The Nominator shall submit a Nomination Letter.

The award criteria must be addressed in the letters. Do not submit separate documentation related to the critera.

Additional information submitted with the nomination will not be considered; please include only requested information and refer to the guidelines when organizing submission packets.

Selection Process

Nominations will be reviewed and selected by the Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee with the immediate past chair of the Academic Advising Council or their designee. Committee recommendations will be made on the basis of the information submitted; the committee does not solicit additional information.
